Notes from March 11 Round Table at Eagle Cap School: Eagle Cap services between 30-35 students. Most of these students excel in a more independent structural setting with fewer pupils. Students can move between the high school and Eagle Cap if they chose just one class from Eagle Cap. Math and Culinary arts are very popular. Eagle Cap School is not necessarily the alternative school that at risk kids would attend. The indepentent structure most often isn't appropriate for them.

Next Business Round Table is December 11 at the Little Bagel Shop at 8am
Business Round Table Meeting Minutes: August 14, 2013 8am
In Attendance: Amy VanGaasbeck, Lilly Lovell, Carolyn Kulog, Pam Peyron, Debi Bainter
We asked how sales were during Jubilee: All retail attendees agree it was a great weekend for sales. Amy mentioned that she opened an hour before both the Jubilee and Shrine parade and had more sales in that hour than the rest of the day. Reminder, the next community meeting to plan Jubilee for 2014 is at the Sunridge Best Western on September 18 at 6pm. New organizational committees must be named for this event to continue next year.
As for events, Frank Davis from Dejavu asked if we could put together an Antique Roadshow type event. (We can’t use those exact words as they are restricted). Amy said she would join Frank and Debi on an organizational committee.
The upcoming HBC Taste of Baker was discussed. Debi reminded everyone that Kate was looking for volunteers. Amy mentioned that with the Studio Tours that weekend, she encourages business to put an artist in their front window working on a project. She always gets great response when she sits in her front window at the Dancing Elephant. If you aren’t a gallery or an artist, invite a local artist into your store for that afternoon. There are a few things going on during the day so take advantage of the traffic and get them into your store.
Planning for the holiday season:
The group wants to work on putting the coupon books together again this year. We want a map with the participating businesses on the map in the book itself. The Coupon book will be distributed to the hotels, visitor center, and Anthony Lakes Ski Area and participating businesses. The Chamber has been tasked with negotiating with Community Connections to run the Holiday Trolley again this year. First thoughts are for the trolley to run from 1-4pm and have scheduled stops at each of the participating members on the Saturday of the Christmas parade and tree lighting.
Discussion ensued regarding getting the locals in the Christmas Spirit. If Baker City isn’t in the “Spirit”, the customers will go where the “Christmas Spirit” is more obvious, so we need to kick it up a notch. The downtown Christmas tree needs more decorations and lights, the fence around the tree to keep cars from running into it needs more “Spirit” White picket fence, or decorate the barricades to look like presents.
What’s the plan?
We all have Christmas decorations we won’t be putting up this year or any year. We need to ask the community to help us collect lights, decorations, and Christmas scenes that we can use or keep. We need to encourage every business owner to decorate with Christmas lights, add a coupon to our coupon book (All businesses are invited to work on the holiday planning meeting regardless of Baker County Chamber membership, but nonmembers will have a fee of $20 to be in the coupon book itself) We want to give that Saturday of the Tree Lighting and Parade a feeling of Holiday open house. Christmas specials on the menus, everyone open a window and turn a stereo speak out onto the sidewalk and let the Christmas Carols flow, offer a swig of Holiday Apple Cider or a set out a basket of Christmas cookies to help sweeten up your customers. Invite a local musician to play Christmas songs the piano, a guitar, harp or flute.
The next Business Round Table meeting will be September 11, 2013 at 8am at the Baker County Chamber of Commerce Office at 490 Campbell Street. There is a Nonprofit Town Hall meeting at Baker Library on Resort Street from 9-11:30 so we will be very timely that day.
