Author visit - Bette Lynch Husted
Noted Northwest author, Bette Lynch Husted, will be at Crossroads Carnegie Art Center in Baker City on Friday, July 27 at 7 p.m. to speak about her recently published debut novel "All Coyote's Children". Husted lives in Pendleton and has spent most of her life in the inland northwest. Coyote's Children is set in NE Oregon with a contemporary setting that rings true to life in various ways, while also referencing historical incidents that affect life today. The novel follows a mother and her son Riley as they seek Riley's father Jack, who has disappeared into an Eastern Oregon wilderness. Together with their Native and non-Native neighbors on the Umatilla Indian Reservation, they uncover the stories that help them solve the mystery of Jack's disappearance as they become part of this community. Carolyn Kulog of Betty's Books said "I read and enjoyed this book [Coyote's Children] very much, but could not possibly be more articulate than author Molly Gloss who says about the book '...Husted's open heart is in every line of this book. Though she does not veer away from the truth of cataclysmic events, there is humor and great kindness here, and the healing strength of community.'" "All Coyote's Children" is published by Oregon State University Press and is available in paperback for $18.95. It also may be borrowed from the Baker County Library and other Sage library partners. https://goo.gl/JtRVBe In a book review in the Sunday Oregonian on June 10, Richard Etulain says that the main character in Husted’s novel "sees and comprehends connections between white and Native peoples and between parents and offspring, but the author also provides samples of the racism, conflicts and jealousies that divide and complicate family and community." Husted previously appeared in Baker City as part of the Oregon Book Awards author tour and has published both poetry and memoir works, as well as teaching English at BMCC and other locations for many years. Kulog adds "We are very pleased to welcome Bette back to our community and invite you to join us to spend an hour with this fine eastern Oregon literary voice." The Crossroads Arts Center doors will open at 6:30 pm and refreshments will be served. This event is sponsored by the partnership of Betty's Books, Crossroads Art Center and Baker County Library District.
