Baker County is at the hub of five scenic byways and the home to
Hells Canyon, the deepest river gorge in North America.
Jet boat tours and raft trips through the canyon provide an
opportunity to see ancient Indian rock drawings and historic
sites.
The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center
just outside of Baker City sits adjacent to the deep wagon ruts
marking the pioneer’s trek through Baker County. The Center
depicts the Oregon Trail journey from Independence, Missouri to
Oregon City, Oregon through a series of life-sized dioramas,
exhibits, and interpretive displays.
Anthony Lakes provides outdoor recreational opportunities
in an alpine setting that is easily reached by paved highway.
The area is a center for summer hiking and camping, and during
the winter, Ski Anthony Lakes Mountain Resort
offers
downhill and Nordic skiing, snow boarding, snow mobiling, and a
host of fun activities.
The Sumpter Valley Railway, a narrow gauge steam train,
takes passengers along the rock pilings of the Powder River.
Through wildlife refuge area to the Sumpter Valley Dredge
State Park located just north of the historic mining town of
Sumpter.
Numerous museums, many ghost towns, and walking tours of
Historic Baker City recall our rich and colorful history of the
Oregon Trail, gold mining, timber production, and ranching.
Opportunities for outdoor recreational activities abound with
camping, boating, hiking, bicycling, fishing, hunting, wildlife
viewing, rafting, skiing, and snowmobiling are available to
locals and travelers alike.
We look forward to your visit.
