5K/10K RUN/WALK – “HOOFIN’ IT TO BEEF FIT” WITH OREGON CATTLEWOMEN
BAKER CITY, OREGON__The Oregon CattleWomen kick off their second annual “Hoofin’ It to Beef Fit” 5K/10K Run/Walk on Saturday, August 5, 2017, at 8 a.m. The race proceeds help fund the purchase of the popular, Baker County Shrine Steer to be auctioned later in the day, benefiting the Shriners Hospital for Children.
“Come hoof it with us! It’s a great way to help support children from throughout Oregon,” says Wendy Bingham, President-Elect of the Oregon CattleWomen. “This race represents the role of beef in a healthy lifestyle, while also supporting kids in need of assistance at the Shriners Hospital for Children. The race starts at Thomas Angus Ranch, where people can enjoy a little touch of ranch life as they gather.”
The 5K course begins at the scenic Thomas Angus Ranch, 42598 N. Cedar Street, Baker City, Oregon. The 10K course just added this year begins at the Mackenzie Ranch at 19265 Chandler Lane, Baker City. Racers "HOOF IT" past ranches and on in to the Leo Adler Memorial Parkway along the Powder River, ending the race at Geiser Pollman Park on Madison Street in downtown Historic Baker City. The race terrain is flat and Baker City sits at an elevation of 3451 feet.
Gathering time, sign in and registration begins at 7 a.m. at the start line. Hoofin' It time begins at 8 a.m. The cost of registration is $25 for the 5K and $35 for the 10K; pre-registration is strongly suggested to ensure t-shirt size. Prizes will be awarded. The award ceremony will be held near the finish line, following the race at 9:45 a.m.
Since 1953, the Oregon CattleWomen have been participating in the advancement of the cattle industry through promotion and education. The 5K/10K “Hoofin’ It to Beef Fit” is an extraordinary event hosted by people who love the land, animals and nature. The finish line at Geiser Pollman Park will include a life-size bull to take selfies next to, showing that participants were really hoofin’ it! The Baker County CattleWomen will be hosting their well-known steak breakfast and Gridiron Tailgate Event.
“The race offers a taste of what the Oregon CattleWomen do in public outreach throughout the year, across the state,” says Wendy. “Our school visits and work at Ag Fest, Oregon State Fair, Volcanoes Baseball and similar events bring cattle ranchers to town to talk about ranching, share their experiences and answer questions.” Oregon Cattlemen and CattleWomen will be available to visit with before and after the race.
The run takes place the morning of the East-West Shrine Football game, an annual battle of the best football players from small schools across Oregon. Proceeds from the race help purchase the steer that is auctioned off at half time of the football game. A phenomenal amount of money has been raised in past years for the Shriners Hospital for Children from the steers provided by Baker County Cattlemen and CattleWomen.
