Crossroads First Friday
Crossroads Carnegie Art Center will present “The Vanishing West,” an exhibit of 28 black-and-white photographs by Corvallis, OR, photographer Rich Bergeman, Aug. 4-26.
An opening reception will be held Friday Aug. 4 from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Bergeman's photographs chronicle the disappearing traces of frontier days on Columbia Plateau and Northern Great Basin--deserted homesteads, abandoned schoolhouses, and ghost towns giving up their ghosts. A book containing over 50 images, with end-notes on the histories of each location, will be available for purchase at the reception.
The photographer has spent much of the past two decades creating art out of forgotten histories in Oregon and Washington, focusing particularly on the far-flung eastern parts of both states. The Crossroads Carnegie exhibit includes images of old towns, historic ranches and deserted homesteads from the High Desert and mountain mining areas of eastern Oregon, as well as the Okanogan and Palouse regions of Washington. Such formerly prosperous turn-of-the-century Oregon towns as Flora, Antelope, Granite, Richmond and Cornucopia are represented, as well as Govan, Goodnoe Hills, and Molson in Washington, among others.
